SPARTA, Ky. — Sheldon Creed has been picture-perfect so far at Kentucky Speedway.
After putting up the fastest lap in the open test Wednesday, the Alpine, Calif. driver was fastest in practice earlier today. Creed, in the No 28 United Rentals-MDM Motorsports Toyota, answered his fast practice run with his career-first General Tire pole Friday afternoon.
“We have a really good car…I could drive it to its limits today,” said Creed. “Our long-run speed is good too…we’re strong overall. We’ll see what happens in the race. I’m feeling really good about it.”
Creed circled the 1.5-mile track in 29.301 seconds (184.294 mph), very near the one-lap track record of 29.261 set by Chase Briscoe in 2016. Since the track was resurfaced in October 2016, General Tire brought a harder compound to accommodate the new pavement.
“I like a hard tire compound because the tire doesn’t go away as fast,” Creed said. “Really happy with what we have so far. We got tighter and tighter in practice. Hopefully, it’ll get looser in the race and the track will come to us. We’ve also got the pit stops to work on it.”
Creed also acknowledged that the groove, typical of new pavement, is fairly narrow.
“It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out tonight. We’re going to have to deal with lapped traffic so you’re going to have to go up there in the gray. Hope we catch the lapped cars at good points on the track. I like when the groove goes up so hopefully that second lane will come in.”
Creed’s MDM teammate Zane Smith will join him on the front row in the second starting position for tonight’s Crosley Brands 150, Live on FS1 at 8 p.m. Eastern. Follow along with Live Timing, Scoring and Chat at arcaracing.com.
