(Vernon, NY) By Steven Ovens – September 6, 2013 – This Saturday will mark the Inaugural ‘Cole Cup’ to be held at the Utica-Rome Speedway. The Cole Cup is a $7,000 to win 360 sprint car race being held at “The Fast Track”, which just hosted the Empire Super Sprints this past Sunday during Labor Day Weekend.
This is one of the richest paying 360 Sprint races of the season this side of the Peace Bridge in New York. The Canadian Sprint Car Nationals will be the highest paying 360 Sprint race locally. But Utica-Rome Speedway owner Gene Cole saw an opportunity to promote a special fall sprint car spectacular just one week after hosting the ESS tour.
Utica-Rome has long been a holiday weekend stop for the ESS tour. Every Sunday of Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day weekends- fans fill the Vernon, NY speedplant to witness some of the best racing of the season. Drivers like Chuck Hebing, Lance Yonge, Stewart Friesen and Jessica Zemken all are expected to be on hand to compete for the top prize. Sunday’s winner ‘Racin’ Jason’ Barney, who collected $2,000 for his efforts, looks to back up that win with a win in the first ever Cole Cup.
Other names that are starting to filter on to the entry list are Mid-West sprint car ace Wayne Johnson and Canadian hot shoe Glenn Styres who is rumored to be bringing a fleet of 3-4 360 methanol breathing sprint cars. The entry list over the weekend was between 27 and 30 entries, with an anticipated field of at least 50 cars.
The Empire Super Sprints, Patriot Sprint Tour and United Racing Club all have freed up Saturday on their respective tour calendars to encourage a large turnout. ESS and PST will be awarded show-up points for their series points while URC has left the date open on their schedule. Pennsylvania sprint car star Aaron Ott made the trip to Utica-Rome for the ESS show on Sunday, taking a Top-5 finish, and looks to be an early favorite to win the Cup.
The night will be full of excitement and special events. The coolest part of the night may be the cup presentation. During tonight’s episode of the 31st Lap Podcast, it was discussed that the Cole Cup will be presented ‘Stanley Cup Style’. Complete with a gentleman dressed up in a fancy suit and carrying the Cole Cup with white gloves.
The only way to take in the action is to go on out to the Utica-Rome Speedway on Saturday night and witness 360 sprint car history. You can keep up with the latest news on the Inaugural Cole Cup by racing over to www.uticaromespeedway.com
