Eddie MacDonald brought one stout ride to New Smyrna Speedway on Sunday evening.

He was fastest in every practice session during the day, earned the pole for the feature by advancing from ninth to second in his heat race (giving him a +7 in ACT’s plus/minus handicap system) and scored the victory in the non-points American Racer Challenge 100 by leading every lap.

In a remarkable twist, the entire 100 lap main event was run caution-free in 33 minutes and 42 seconds.

MacDonald got away from Alex Labbe and Jeff Rocco on the initial start and was hardly challenged for the lead for the rest of the feature. Multiple drivers throughout the field had side-by-side battles, but were never able to make huge gains on their way to the front as they tried to avoid the slower traffic.

Oddly enough, out of the top ten drivers that started the feature event, seven of them were still there at the conclusion.

While Alex Labbe was able to hang onto second for much of the first half of the race, Patrick Laperle pounced on a chance and found himself battling for the win in the late stages, trying to chase down MacDonald.

He caught MacDonald while stuck in lapped traffic but was only able to get to Eddie Mac’s back bumper before he stalled out and lost ground.

MacDonald was able to maneuver his way through lapped traffic towards the finish, opening up his gap even more and notching his first career victory at the New Smyrna Speedway. Dating back to 2013, MacDonald has now won 5 of his last 13 races on the ACT Tour.

Patrick Laperle was forced to settle for second, with Wayne Helliwell Jr. coming home third, Travis Sterns fourth and Joey Polewarcyk, Jr. completing the top five.

Early front-runner Alex Labbe, Aaron Fellows, Ray Parent, Luke Hinkley and Bradley Babb completed the top ten spots. 23 of the 26 starters were on the track for the checkered flag.

The ACT Tour will compete in their second night of action on Monday night, beginning the two-night American Racer Challenge Cup.
