SYRACUSE, NY — official release — It was has become a favorite annual stop along the Niagara Frontier will be the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints visit to the Merrittville Speedway. The event will be in honor of Gary Cunningham father of former sprint car pilot Travis Cunningham.
Coming into the stop at the exciting D-Shaped oval Steve Poirier collected his first win on the tour last week at Lebanon Valley. But, his closest rival in the points Jeff Cook finished a close runner-up keeping the four-time champ right in his sites.
It will be an unique battle, while Poirier is atop the overall points for the Lucas Oil Champinship, Cook leads the Quebec native by one point in the Le Groupe Ultra Tour of Canada standings. They will be leading the ESS contingent of Etienne Girard, Jason Barney, Matt Tanner, Kevin Ward Jr., Chuck Hebing, Paul Kinney, Shawn Donath, Mike Stelter, Dave and Tim Axton and others.
What makes this stop very unique is the influx of locals from the Ohsweken Speedway and also the Southern Ontario Sprints organization. Some of the great drivers from the area that are expected are Glenn Styres, Mitch Brown, Jim Huppunen, Chris Steele, Keith Dempster, Todd Doddick, Justin Martin, Jamie and Cory Turner, Stan Zanchin and others.
