GASTONIA, N.C. — Carolina-area racers and fans are buzzing over the announcement that the inaugural Eastridge Mall Motorsports Expo will be held Feb. 2325, 2018 at Eastridge Mall in Gastonia, N.C.

The expo is the brainchild of local sprint car racer Shawn Mott, who has organized similar events in the past in his former home area of New York State.

Mott felt it was time that an area known for its motorsports culture had a yearly event that kicks off the local racing season by giving fans a chance to come and see the cars and stars who will be competing in local and regional series.

“I’ve been wanting to put something like this together in this area for a while now,” Mott said. “We have trade shows here each year, but our show is not a swap meet or a racer trade show. It’s much more about allowing racers and tracks a place to come and connect with the fans for a weekend and, hopefully, make some new fans out of those who drop by the mall to shop and see the cars. I hope this will become a tradition that continues and expands each year.”

Steve Stout, the manager of the Eastridge Mall, is equally excited about the upcoming event.

“When Shawn approached me about doing the show, I was really intrigued by the idea of being able to be a connecting point for area racers, fans and our shoppers. With tracks like Carolina Speedway right in our backyard and so many racers and teams in the area, I believe the Eastridge Mall is a perfect place to gather for a ‘season preview’ type of event.”

“It gives our stores and regular shoppers something fun and different and it will bring fresh faces to our mall as area fans who may not have previously shopped with us come out to see the show. We are really looking forward to February.”

Cherokee Speedway was the first speedway to indicate their intention to be a part of the event, along with the traveling Carolina Sprint Tour.

Among the drivers already committed are sprint car racers Lance Moss (USCS) and Dan Jones (Carolina Sprint Tour), renegade racers Travis Caverness, Bundy Stowe, Bobby Horne and Carl Maree, open wheel modified racer Chris Smith, hornet racers Tim Jennings, Kenneth Barrett and Steven Swanson, along with several go-kart teams from area speedways.

The list continues to grow and will include racers from both dirt and pavement along with more tracks and series, according to Mott.

“We are getting more and more interest as word gets out,” said Mott. “We have limited space, so we encourage any teams, tracks or series who wish to commit to being a part of our show to contact us as soon as possible.”

“I can’t thank Steve and his staff at the Eastridge Mall enough for their enthusiasm to host the show. We’ll have more announcements as news happens with the show. We hope all the area fans will mark their calendars and plan to stop out and see us in February!”

Tracks, teams or series who wish to be a part of the show should contact Shawn Mott via email as soon as possible at ptcsolutionsnc@yahoo.com.
