Joliet, Ill– Following Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series event from Chicagoland Speedway, NASCAR officials have conformed that race the winning car the No.78 with driver Martin Truex Jr. along with 12th place finisher the No.48 of Jimmie Johnson have failed the post-race Laser Inspection Station.

NASCAR officials said however, the neither car exceeded the laser specifications that would result in stiffer penalties. Thus it will not “encumber” the results moving forward.

In previous LIS failures this season, this would normally result in a level-P2 penalty that came with a 10 to 15 point penalty and $15,000 fine.

However, under the new rules in place for the rest of the Sprint Cup Series season, if a team fails LIS by a substantial margin, teams could face severe penalties; loss of crew chief for three races and a 35 point deduction from both car and owner championship points.

Both teams will face a penalty this upcoming week.
