Tyler Ankrum qualified third and ran as high as second in the CARS Tour Super Late Model main event on Saturday at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, North Carolina, before the car’s handling went away.

Ultimately, the 15-year-old California transplant (now living in Greensboro, North Carolina) hung on for a seventh place finish and was very happy with the performance, if not so much the result.

“I learned a lot running second behind (Christopher) Bell for 70 laps,” Ankrum explained. “We fell to fourth for a restart behind Bell and I got right back to second. But toward the end the car got really loose up off the corners, and at this track that’s especially hard to overcome. We ended up seventh, which doesn’t really show what a great job our team did in giving me a top three car, but at the same time it gives us confidence that we are making gains, so it was a fun weekend overall.”

This race weekend followed Ankrum’s first trip to the Nashville Fairgrounds, which was an experience he won’t soon forget.

“That track is so fast!” he smiled. “It’s the first time I’ve ever been on a track where my knees were shaking going down the front straightaway when we tested there. We were fast in practice there and sat on CRA’s heat race pole, but they inverted the top 8 cars on a pill draw — so guess where I ended up starting in my heat?”

“Yep,” the racer said with a laugh.  “We finished seventh in the heat, started 13th for the 75-lap feature the next day and finished right where we started.  Again, that wasn’t the finish we went there for, but we are still learning and growing as a team, and I’m still learning as a driver.  This was a new and really different track for us.  It’s now one of my favorite tracks. I can’t wait to go back there!”

The next race for Ankrum and the team is next weekend, tackling the first race of the Deep South Crane Blizzard Series at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.
