YREKA, Calif. – official release — Northwest Racing Productions photo — Kyle Hirst claimed the opening leg of ASCS Northwest Speedweek Sunday night at Siskiyou Motor Speedway.
Despite a caution occurring on the opening start Rico Abreu would seize lead on the second start, setting the pace on lap one. Abreu would soon find himself under pressure from Hirst for the top spot.
A couple of cautions would briefly bring a halt to the battle for the lead but Hirst would make some key moves in traffic after a lap nine restart to eventually seize the lead on lap 15 just before another caution came out. Hirst would find himself fighting off Abreu and Sean Becker in the late stages in traffic, but he managed to stay out front.
A late race caution on lap 27 would bunch up the field one last time. Hirst would do well on the ensuing restart and create enough breathing room to put the Finley Farms/CLT Logging/Carlson Trucking/Rider Racing Engines No. 77 Maxim in victory circle for car owners Scott and Jason Finley.
The victory was Hirst’s second career Northwest Speedweek triumph and his third career ASCS Northwest Region triumph.
“It’s awesome to get this win, we’ve been fast all year,” said Hirst. “Rracing with Rico is fun and to steal a win from him is great because he’s usually going by us. I got to thank Scott and Jason (Finley), Corey, and my buddy Mikey. Thanks to those guys involved, it’s going to be a really fun week.”
Abreu finished second, followed by Becker, Colin Baker and Steven Tiner.
