Bathurst winner Chaz Mostert has finished at the top of the times in the second practice session at the Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400.

The young gun recorded his 1:31.1252 second flying lap with four minutes to go in the 20-minute run, topping the Red Bulls, which sat one-two for the majority of the session.

Others also pounced in the final minutes, with Jason Bright just 0.3 seconds behind and Michael Caruso and FPR teammate Mark Winterbottom shooting up into the top five, ahead of Whincup, with Garth Tander splitting he and Craig Lowndes.

Mostert recorded just the one flyer, with an error on his second go prompting him to abort and save tires.

“We’ve got one more practice to go, so saved those [tires] for out the gate next and hopefully we’ve got some good tires – it’s a long way to go, it’s only early,” Mostert said.

Having a good car for qualifying tomorrow is incredibly important, with Mostert saying starting in the front few rows was a massive advantage last year at the free-flowing 4.445 km Phillip Island circuit.

“I started in the top five twice last year and I was in a good position, so another 12 months later with more experience, it helps out a lot,” Mostert said. “We had good car speed here last year; it’s looking ok at the moment, but I think there’s a lot of other people out there with mixed bags of rubber at the moment.”

“We’ll see what happens when everyone chucks some good stuff on.”

Light contact between Fabian Coulthard and Jack Perkins was reported early in the session, while Russell Ingall’s Repair Management team dealt with a power steering leak mid-session.

Behind Lowndes, who was seventh in the session, was practice one’s fast man Scott Pye, his DJR teammate David Wall and Tim Slade completing the top 10.

The day’s final practice session at the Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400 begins at 1:45 p.m. local time.
